What to check when a recipe doesn't do what you expect, and what each error message means.
Nothing happens
Is the recipe active? In the board, open Integrate > Board integrations and check that the recipe is on.
Did the trigger fire? "When column changes" runs only when that column changes. Change it on a test item.
Is the result DO-NOTHING? If the formula returns DO-NOTHING, the target is left as it is.
Is the plan limit reached? At 100% of the monthly operations recipes stop. Check the Console.
Is there an error? General Caster notifies the user who changed the item, and the Console lists every error with its reason.
Debug a formula
Temporarily cast the result into a Text column. A Text column accepts anything, so you see exactly what the formula produces: a date as 45293 instead of 2024-01-01, a #VALUE! error, an extra space. Fix the formula, then switch the target back.
Tasks board General Caster
When Date changes, perform formula and cast result to Debug (Text)
TEXT(DATEVALUE({item's Date}) + 5, "YYYY-MM-DD")

Error messages
Notifications start with "General Caster Error". Find yours below.
Your formula contains one or more errors.
Why: The formula can't be read: a parenthesis or a quote is missing, a separator is wrong, or a function doesn't exist.
Fix: Check that parentheses and quotes are balanced, that arguments are separated by commas and that the function names are in the Function reference.
The column "…" did not accept the value "…".
Why: The formula worked, but its result doesn't have the format the target column expects, for example a date written as 45293 or a label the Status column can't create.
Fix: The item updates contain a note with the expected format, the value produced and a suggestion. Compare it with Column values.
No loop allowed. Target column should not be in formula.
Why: The formula reads the column it should write into.
Fix: Write the result into another column, or chain two recipes. See Loops and chains.
No loop allowed. Target column should not be the same as input.
Why: The currency recipe reads and writes the same column.
Fix: Choose a different Numbers column as target.
This feature requires a paid plan.
Why: The recipe uses something not included in the Free plan: item name, People, files, another board, currency.
Why: All the operations of the period are used: recipes stop until the period restarts.
Fix: Upgrade the plan, or wait for the next period. The Console shows when it restarts.
Your General Caster plan has expired.
Why: The plan bought on our website has reached its end date.
Fix: Renew the plan, or buy one from the monday.com marketplace.
monday.com could not find the item, board or column used by this automation.
Why: Something the recipe uses was deleted or moved to another board, or General Caster has no access to the workspace that contains it.
Fix: Check that the item and the target column still exist; if a column was deleted, recreate the recipe. Make sure General Caster is allowed in the workspace in monday.com Administration > Apps.
No user of this account matches "…"
Why: The formula wrote a name, or an email that doesn't belong to an active user, into a People column.
Fix: Write user IDs (69420:person) or emails of users of the account. See People.
The target column doesn't exist.
Why: The target column was deleted or the recipe points to a column of another board.
Fix: Open the recipe and choose the target column again.
Excel error values
Results like #DIV/0!, #VALUE! or #NAME? come from the formula itself. Their meaning and fix are in Writing formulas.
The date is in a strange year
The formula wrote a date serial number or a date in another format. End the formula with TEXT(..., "YYYY-MM-DD"). See Dates and times.
