Coming from the Formula column

The syntax is almost the same, but a formula can't be pasted as is. Here is what changes.

References

The Formula column writes {Column}, General Caster uses {item's Column}. After pasting a formula, replace every reference by clicking the column buttons at the bottom of the General Caster editor.

Functions with a different name

Some functions of the Formula column don't exist in Excel. Use these equivalents:

Formula columnGeneral Caster
ADD_DAYS({Date}, 5)TEXT(DATEVALUE({item's Date}) + 5, "YYYY-MM-DD")
SUBTRACT_DAYS({Date}, 5)TEXT(DATEVALUE({item's Date}) - 5, "YYYY-MM-DD")
FORMAT_DATE({Date}, "DD/MM/YYYY")TEXT(DATEVALUE({item's Date}), "DD/MM/YYYY")
WORKDAYS({To}, {From})NETWORKDAYS(DATEVALUE({item's From}), DATEVALUE({item's To}))
HOURS_DIFF({End}, {Start})(TIMEVALUE({item's End}) - TIMEVALUE({item's Start})) * 24
DIVIDE({A}, {B}){item's A} / {item's B}
MULTIPLY({A}, {B}){item's A} * {item's B}
MINUS({A}, {B}){item's A} - {item's B}
{Timeline#Start}LEFT({item's Timeline}, 10)
{Timeline#End}RIGHT({item's Timeline}, 10)
{Time Tracking#Hours}HOUR({item's Time Tracking})
{Time Tracking#Minutes}MINUTE({item's Time Tracking})
{Time Tracking#Seconds}SECOND({item's Time Tracking})

Using a Formula column as input

The value you see in a Formula column is calculated in your browser and isn't stored in the column, so General Caster can't read it. Rewrite that calculation inside the General Caster formula, or move it into its own General Caster recipe and read the column it writes.

A migration plan

  1. Add a target column of the right type next to each Formula column.
  2. Create the recipe, translating the formula with the table above.
  3. Compare the two columns on a few items, then change items to trigger the recipe.
  4. When the results match, hide or delete the Formula column and point your automations and dashboards to the new column.
