Column values
What General Caster reads from each column type, and what a formula must produce to write into it.
Two simple rules
- Columns with several values, like Dropdown or Connect boards, use
+between values:first+second+third. - Columns with several parts, like Link or Location, use
:between parts:first:second:third.
The format is the same in both directions: a column reference returns the value in this format, and a formula that writes into that column type must produce the same format. A Timeline reference returns 2013-02-08+2013-02-20, and to write a Timeline you produce the same kind of text.

Status and Dropdown labels
When a formula produces a label that the Status or Dropdown column doesn't have yet, General Caster asks monday.com to create it. monday.com allows that only if the user who added the recipe can edit the column's labels, and a Status column has a limited number of labels: if the label can't be created, the value is rejected and you'll find the reason in the item updates and in the Console.
To avoid surprises, make the formula produce exactly the labels you already have, with the same spelling.
People
To assign someone, produce id:person or id:team, or the email of a user of the account; the name part is optional. Names alone are not accepted, because two people can share a name. The quickest way to find the ID is to read a People column that already contains the person: {item's Owner} returns 69420:person:Tim Apple.
IF({item's Status} = "Urgent", "69420:person", "42069:team")To copy the emails of the people into a Text or Email column, use MONDAY.PEOPLE.EMAIL: it returns the emails separated by + and skips teams. It's available on every plan.
MONDAY.PEOPLE.EMAIL({item's Owner})Empty values
An empty column returns an empty text, so check for it when the formula needs a value: IF({item's Date} = "", "DO-NOTHING", ...). To leave the target untouched, return DO-NOTHING: see Writing formulas.
