General Caster documentation
General Caster is a monday.com app that runs Excel-style formulas and other operations on your items, then writes ("casts") the result into a real column.
How it works
Everything in General Caster is an integration recipe that you add to a board, just like the monday.com automations. A recipe has two parts:
- a trigger, which decides when it runs: when an item is created, when a column changes, when any column changes or when a status changes;
- an action, which decides what it does: perform a formula and cast the result to a column, convert a currency, create a barcode or a map, increment a number.
Each time a recipe runs on an item, General Caster reads the columns it needs, calculates the result and writes it into the target column. Because the result is a real column value, monday.com automations, dashboards, filters and other integrations can use it.
Key concepts
| Formula | An expression in Excel syntax, like {item's Price} * {item's Quantity}. See Writing formulas. |
|---|---|
| Cast | Writing the result into a target column, in the format that column expects. See Column values. |
| Operation | One run of a recipe on one item. Plans include a number of operations per month. See Plans and operations. |
| Console | The page where you see your plan, usage, active users and errors. See Console. |
