Subitems and mirrors

Functions that summarize columns holding many values: subitems summaries, mirrored columns and multi-value columns.

Why you need them

A mirrored column, or the summary of a subitems column, returns all the values joined by +, like 120+80+45. Excel functions like SUM can't read that text, so General Caster adds functions that take the column and return one value.

MONDAY.NUMBER.SUM({item's Subitems Cost}) * 1.22
Pro plan

MONDAY.* functions require the Pro plan or higher, except MONDAY.PEOPLE.EMAIL.

Using subitems

  1. In the parent board, show the summary of the subitems column you need (or add a mirror column that points to it). You can hide it later.
  2. Reference that column in the formula, wrapped in the function you need.
  3. Use When any column changes as trigger, so the result updates when the summary changes.

Other tricks

  • Last value: TRIM(RIGHT(SUBSTITUTE({item's Mirror}, "+", REPT(" ", 999)), 999))
  • First value: LEFT({item's Mirror}, FIND("+", {item's Mirror} & "+") - 1)
  • How many times a word appears: see Count a word in subitems.

Older names

The older HELPER.*, SUBITEMS.* and MIRROR.* functions (COUNT, MIN, MAX, SUM, AVG, EARLIEST, LATEST, EARLIESTLATEST) still work but are deprecated: replace them with the MONDAY.* functions above.
